There's a difference between a season that is attacking you and a season that is testing you. Both are hard. Both involve real difficulty and real pain. But they are not the same thing. And treating a test like an attack, or an attack like a test, leads to very different responses that produce very different results.
Abraham was tested. Job was tested. Joseph was tested. The disciples were tested. Jesus himself was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested. Testing isn't a sign that something has gone wrong. It's often a sign that God is doing something serious and He trusts you to go through it.
But how do you know when you're in a test? Here are the signs I've seen, in Scripture and in my own life.
The Trial Feels Strangely Specific to Your Weak Point
Tests in Scripture tend to be targeted. Abraham's test wasn't random difficulty. It went directly to the thing he loved most. His son. The thing God had promised him. The test was designed to reveal whether Abraham trusted God more than he trusted the gift God had given him.
When the hard season you're in feels like it's pressing directly on the thing you struggle most to surrender, that specificity is worth noticing. God doesn't waste difficulty. When it's targeted, it's usually intentional.
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."
James 1:2-3
You Feel a Pull Toward God Rather Than Away From Him
This is one of the clearest distinctions between a trial that is a test and one that is simply suffering without redemptive purpose in the moment. In a test, something in you keeps wanting to run toward God even when it's hard. You find yourself praying more, not less. Reading Scripture because you genuinely need it, not because you feel obligated.
This doesn't mean the test isn't painful. It absolutely is. But the orientation of your heart during it tells you something.
God doesn't waste difficulty. When it's targeted, it's usually intentional.
The Difficulty Is Producing Something in You
Tests produce things. James 1:3 says the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Romans 5:3-4 says suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope. If you look back at a hard season you've already been through and you can point to something it built in you, something that wasn't there before, that's the fingerprint of a test rather than just random suffering.
In the middle of the test you usually can't see what's being produced. You just feel the pressure. But the fruit becomes visible on the other side.
God Keeps Reminding You of His Faithfulness in the Past
When you're in a season of testing, God often brings to mind specific moments of His faithfulness in earlier seasons. A time He provided when you didn't know how things would work out. A relationship that was restored. A door that opened. These aren't random memories. They're anchors. God is reminding you of His track record because He's asking you to trust it again.
"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago."
Psalm 77:11
You Have a Sense That This Season Has an Expiration Date
This one is hard to describe but real. In a test, there tends to be a quiet, underlying sense that this is not permanent. Not certainty. Not knowing when it ends. Just a settled awareness that God is doing something and that when He's finished, the season will shift.
This is different from the hopeless feeling of a season that feels like it might last forever. Tests carry a sense of purpose even when they're painful. Even when you can't articulate what the purpose is.
What to Do in the Middle of a Test
Don't run from it. Stay present and engaged with God through it rather than waiting for it to be over before you re-engage. Keep doing the next right thing, even small. Keep giving. Keep showing up. Keep praying, even if the prayers feel thin.
And tell God honestly what you're feeling. He already knows. But saying it out loud keeps the relationship honest and keeps you from the quiet drift that happens when you start processing a hard season in isolation.
"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."
James 1:12
If you're in a test right now, I want to say this: you wouldn't be in it if God didn't trust you to come through it. He doesn't test people He has abandoned. He tests people He is developing. Hold on. The test has a finish line.
A Closing Prayer
Lord, if this is a test, help me pass it. Not because I'm strong enough on my own but because You are faithful enough to bring me through. Show me what You're building in this season. Give me the endurance to stay the course. And when it's over, help me remember what it taught me. Amen.
